mid june and we are just about to celebrate the queen's birthday here with yet another public holiday. that does mean that we should be able to get up early and watch the football at 4.55am tomorrow. trying to salvage something after the not so good rugby result.
so, we last updated the news just as we were about to embark on our 3 day sailing trip round the whitsundays. although we were expecting blue skies etc etc, you'll be pleased to know that we sailed out of abel point in wet weather gear and it pouring with rain - just like at home. don't worry, the blue skies did eventually appear and we had a fantastic time with simon being top deckhand. it was a great trip, despite all the crowds at whithaven beach and our very 'tour weary' crew. maybe next time we'll feel brave enough to take a boat ourselves.
leaving airlie beach meant finally leaving the tropics, as we headed overnight to hervey bay, the gateway to fraser island (the largest sand island in the world). and on the first morning we certainly noticed the temperature difference - though it would still be a warm summer's day in the uk. we weren't really expecting much from fraser island (other than a big sand island) and chose a 2-day guided tour rather than a self-drive - but what an experience.
fraser island has definitely been one of the highlights of trip so far. what a stunning place! amazing views; sand roads; unique rainforests; stunning beaches, whales, sharks, turtles, the works. absolutely beautiful and our two days didn't do it justice.
we then had a whistle stop tour of brisbane - definitely need to return here - before heading to the delights of byron bay to pretend to be surfers and hippies for two days. we felt like complete townies but it was a great place to chill out, top up our suntans for the final time and soak up the beach life. it would have been very easy to linger there for too long, as many travellers do... especially as we discovered the best chocolate shop in the world but having had too much fun down the east coast, we needed to head to sydney to try and earn some money.
and that's where we currently are, having been here for just over a week. we've moved into a funky house in glebe for the next 6 weeks as the work prospects seem good (even if it is telesales - oh yes!). haven't really done loads of sightseeing but i guess you get blase going to work, looking at the bay/opera house/bridge/beaches every day. (however don't forget that you're all the same: living in london/cambridge/san jose/peak district etc etc - all got great views that we never appreciate.) |
