once again, it seems that it has a hectic month full of lots of stuff, which is good (but we have done nothing this weekend, which has been fantastic!!).
So, anyway, end of january saw us at the good vibrations festival. a more laid back style of festival (thinking big chill) in the sydney myer music bowl on a sunday afternoon. highlights for us were seeing soul2soul and jazzie b doing all their old classics (making us feel quite old - yes, they did 'back to life'); rob da bank showing the aussies how it's done and us getting to shake his hand and meet his lovely girl friend, and the fantastic moloko as headliners. roisin was mad, fantastic, go and see them! what a great live show..... and we even managed to be in bed before midnight! must be getting old!
the following weekend saw us joining the realms of the 'proper' backpackers with another trip inter-state, this time to adelaide. managed to survive doing the 10-hour overnight red-eye coach journey there and back, and going straight off to work on the monday morning after arriving back in melbourne at 6.30am. primarily we went to adelaide to pay homage to banrock station, we hired a car and with a round trip of over 500kms on the hottest saturday ever (well, until the following weekend) went to outback south australia. banrock station was fantastic: beautiful views of the murray river, wetlands and naturally fantastic wine and food. managing to resist the temptation of shipping wine back the uk, we limited ourselves to only buying 4 bottles of wine.
sunday was spent exploring Adelaide. we really liked the place: relaxing by the beach at glenelg, learning more about aboringal culture at the sa museum and seeing the bradman cricket collection at the state library. adelaide seems a good place to live: nice city, nice weather, nice people, nice beach - just nice!
thankfully the work front has picked up. simon has survived his time as a mail and freight manager for a&r (whsmiths) whilst I have been telemarketing for a market research company trying to getting bookings for focus groups (tough on your self-esteem with 3 days of getting nowhere!). however last week was a swift introduction into the world of greyhound racing working on reception for greyhound racing victoria. i never knew there was so much to the world of greyhound racing!
but we must think of the money, and the fact that doing these great jobs enables us to do exciting things!
we've also been out and about exploring more of victoria. we had a lovely weekend with nick and andrea in ballarat (2hrs out of melbourne). ballarat was the centre of the australian gold rush in the 1850s and they have recreated a typical street from that era at sovereign hill. so we spent the hottest weekend of the year so far (41deg in melbourne) wandering round 1850s ballarat for 2 days. really great hostel, great museum, loads to do, very glad we weren't around in the 1850s - far too much like hard work.
finally made out to mornington again to spend time with gez and anne, who took us off to phillip island and their famous penguins. very very cute little things sprinting up the beach at dusk. not sure who is really watching who though!
looking forward to next week as we will be working at the forsters grand prix as of thursday. can't wait; obviously keep an eye out for us - we'll be the ones infront of the cars at the start (not!). simon has also managed to win two tickets to another music festival - two tribes - where swansea band/djs hybrid (postie and mike) will be playing. we're now on a mission to get in touch with them whilst they are here. |
